Discover the Finger Lakes

While the Finger Lakes region’s assets are well know to its residents, their abundance is being appreciated by interested out-of-towners, as well.

Shermans Travel Media, an online travel business that deals with both bargains and values, providing expert destination advice, recently included the Finger Lakes among its “Top 10 Lake Vacations”, along side Lake Como, Italy, Lake Tahoe, California and other world famous destinations.  ShermansTravel description of the area between Lake Ontario and the northern border of Pennsylvania pointed out that “the area takes its name from the 11 slender blue lakes which stretch out, parallel to each other in almost finger-like formations.”  “Kids of all ages… are initially lured by the abundance of idyllic lakeside retreats, and end up enthralled by the many historic sites, sloping vineyards, wine trails, and annual festivals that occupy the shores surrounding the unique bodies of water.”

Travel writer Linda Fasteson wrote for The Sun Chronicle in Attleboro, Mass., “According to Native American lore, the New York’s Finger Lakes were formed when the Great Spirit cast his hand upon the most beautiful land he had created.  Today, the region is a showpiece of nature’s bounty, from the scenic beauty of its lakes, waterfalls, parks, farms and villages to its fertile soil, lake-moderated climate and culinary abundance… From farm stand to table, and everywhere in between, the Finger Lakes region offers delicious delights served up with sides of scenery and history.  If you visit, be sure to taste as much as you can of this storied piece of New York.”
The annual Finger Lakes Wine Festival held in Watkins Glen, at the southern tip of Seneca Lake, has been designated one of the Top 100 Events in North America for 2011 by the American Bus Association.  Other marquee events on this list include Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Daytona 500.

And, New York Resident, serving its 250,000 New York City readership, published Demetra M. Pappas report entitled, “Tasting the Life in the Finger Lakes” following her attendance at the annual “Slice, Dice and Spice” culinary competition in Canandaigua.  This autumnal event provides the area’s chefs the opportunity to show-off their culinary skills by producing a three-course meal using a surprise market basket of New York products.  The article provided mouth-watering descriptions of the competitors’ offerings, coupled with picturesque accounts of the chefs’ business locales.
The glowing reports filed by this handful of writers provides only a glimpse of what natural wonders and attractions are the Finger Lakes.
